Category: accessible Devices
Quick question. I am looking into buying a police scanner here in a few days, something that I can cary around with me and that will have a nice battery life. The question I have is: What is the best option for accessibility and or workability. I am looking to spend from $100 to $600, so, figured I would ask for help from those who may know better than I. Not to good on the understanding of all the tech stuff, so, will leave that up to someone who knows more. I just want something that is as close to top of the line as I can get for my price range. Any help I can get will be great.
I'd either look at the Pro97 (about $100) or the bcd396t (about $500). The www.radioreference.com wiki has more information. Podcasts are available on www.blindcooltech.com which discuss each of these scanners. Good luck.
I can not help you there sorry.
if u can't help then why even bother to post
hi there
i have a police scanner it's a base one,but i would get one that has about 1000 channels on it,and does multi trunc systems, and have them program it for yu since they don't make the books for it anymore.
radio shack is a good place to buy on,and then get metal hydrate rechargeable batteries

I would approach this by first asking a few questions. What is it you want to monitor? Also, what sorts of radio systems are in your area? E.G. Trunked systems, digital systems, etc. If you don't need something that picks up the new hybrid digital systems, you can save yourself a lot of money. Another option you may want to consider if you want to monitor more than one frequency at a time is a ham radio HT with wide band coverage. They're just as portable as your handheld scanners, and U don't need a lisence to purchase one. The cost is slightly higher than that of a scanner, but I think it's a cool feature to have. In terms of the afformentioned scanners, I think the pro97 is a bit higher priced than 100. This is a good price if you do not need the newer digital systems, but if all of the public safety services have gone digital in your area, and this is what you want to hear, than the pro97 probably isn't for you. It does do trunking though. The bcd396t is, of course, much nicer and offers many more features, hence the much higher price. It does offer digital coverage, and my understanding is that many major cities in the US come preprogrammed in to its memory. THe frequency coverage of the bcd396t is also much wider. Again, without knowing what it is you wish to listen to, it's rather dificult to make a specific recommendation.
Why would anyone want one of these, anyway? For entertainment? I mean, all you can do is listen to people talk on radios, right?
